About this event

When our environment gets cold, we insulate ourselves with extra layers of clothing and we typically don’t spend extended times in the cold. Marine mammals don’t have a choice with how long they stay in their cold environment, nor can they add layers to help maintain their body temperature. One interesting adaptation that allows marine animals to live and thrive in a colder-than-body-temperature environment (the ocean) -- without expending too much energy -- is blubber. How can we model this interesting animal adaptation? In this program, students are challenged to design and conduct an experiment that aims to identify which substances can model the best blubber (or not)! Principles of experimental design will be emphasized along the way.
