There are plenty of beginner-friendly races for first-timers

A sprint-distance race is the best choice for most first-time triathletes. Their relatively short distances (400- to 800-yard swims, nine- to 15-mile rides and 5K or shorter runs) make them the perfect introduction to the sport, and most people can complete a sprint race without intense training.

To get the most out of it, though, and to make sure you have fun (the whole point!), it helps to have some training guidance before your first race.

There are hundreds of sprint races across the United States to choose from, and you can register for scores of them here at Many races and race series are geared toward beginners or have a special first-timers' starting wave.

To help you choose, we've selected some beginner-friendly triathlons from among the hundreds that you can register for at Active.

We'll add races to this section throughout the season, so check back often!
