Sprinters 'peak' earlier in life than distance runners

Athletes participating in strength and speed events, such as sprinting and jumping, peak in the late teens and early 20s, and women athletes tend to peak one or two years earlier in these events. Performances in distance running peak about age 27 for both men and women. This may explain why an individual with a wide range of talent will "move up" to the marathon later in adulthood.
