Nine campers and three staff will grow, explore, adventure, and challenge themselves while kayaking in the world-class waters of the San Juan Archipelago in Northwestern Washington. Paddling double sea kayaks provides a unique opportunity to learn and then practice effective communication skills in a fun and motivating environment. After learning the kayaking and communication skills needed to effectively maneuver a double sea kayak, the group will work with staff to plan a route throughout the San Juan Islands, “hopping” from one majestic island to the next during their journey. Not only do campers have to learn how to work well one on one with their paddling partners, but the team has to be effective at staying together as a group, navigating waters that may have strong tides and currents, and working as a team to set up and take down camp as they move toward their destination. Campers fully participate in every aspect of this expedition, from cooking to cleaning to planning and debriefing. As much as possible, it is one of the primary goals of staff to empower campers to make this expedition their adventure. Our Goals, beyond having ridiculous amounts of fun with newly made friends, are to help develop social and self confidence while providing an exciting, challenging and unforgettable adventure experience. Our Staff support teens through compassionate strength-based perspectives, believing every adolescent has many gifts and unique qualities to offer. Staff honor campers for every positive effort they make, and gently encourage campers to work toward challenging themselves. Our Philosophy supports the making and maintaining of healthy relationships, being compassionate toward others, developing the ability to treat each struggle in life as an opportunity, and doing the hard work of growing and developing both as an individual and as a member of a community.
