This class will help students take their sketches or photos to a more creative interpretation in oils or pastels. Using information gathered on location or from sketches, students will explore options for creating a larger painting. Debra will help students make decisions using composition, value and shapes to create larger works in the studio. Students can bring in their own photos and sketches to work from or Debra will provide some photos for students use. Demos will be done in class and each student will be instructed based on their individual approach and style.
Supply List This is a suggested supply list for oils. You do not have to have all of these, and you can bring your own palette. I carry most of these on location. For those of you who would like to carry less, please see second list. I have listed what I use and the make of the oil paints, but you can choose to use your own brands.
OIL PAINTING LIST PALETTE LIST For those of you who would like to bring fewer paints, please take a look at this list.
You should bring 1 cool and 1 warm of each of the primaries plus white and viridian. I suggest: Reds: Cadmium Red Light Alizarin Crimson Blues: Cobalt Blue Ultramarine Blue (Severs Blue by Rembrandt would be an additional color if needed) Yellows: Cadmium Yellow Deep Cadmium Yellow Pale or light Titanium White and Viridian
Optional: Transparent red oxide, Yellow Ochre, Mauve Blue Shade
You can mix anything with these colors, I just like to move quickly when I am painting and like to have my full palette available.
Solvent: Odorless Turpenoid or Gamsol and a solvent container Brushes: flats bristle 6, 8, 10; rigger 00 -1 Boards or stretched canvas sizes 11x14 thru 18x24
•Hard: Creta Color, 72 stick set; or Faber Castel Poly Chromos or Richeson Square pastels, semi hard at least 24 or more •Medium: Rembrandt or Winsor Newton –landscape assortmen •Soft:Diane Townsend, Unison, Sennelier, Terry Ludwig, Schmincke, Great American . PAPERS: Listed in order of preference (bring a backing board and tape for mounting papers)
UART •Sanded, archival. Will take water, turp, alcohol with no problem and does not buckle. Works great with underpainting. Comes in a variety of sizes and grits. Check Dakota Art Pastels to purchase-my favorite and preferred
La Carte Pastel Card •Archival, textured surface. No liquid on this at all.
Kitty Wallace •Sanded, archival. Comes in 2 price ranges and 2 colors. White and Belgian Mist Gray. These can be purchased in pads or Individual sheets. There is a professional grade and a museum Grade. You can use water, alcohol or turp on this paper. Can buckle with the use of an underpainting. Dry Mount suggested.
Canson Mi Teintes Sheets-less expensive •Not archival. There are different textures on each side of paper, prefer smooth side. Not a sanded surface therefore will not hold as much pastel. Harder to work on.
Glassine is suggested to put between completed paintings for transporting Alcohol or Turp for washes
