Watercolor Paper ? For quick studies or practice work, any brand watercolor paper in pads works well ?at least 140lb. Also, bring one full sheet or a small pad/block of 140lb. Cold Press Arches or a similar quality paper - easier to correct on and less warping.

Palette ? Any plastic palette with wells for paint and at least one or two larger wells for mixing. I use a 9?x12? or larger plastic palette with a cover.

Tools - A soft gray kneaded eraser, a #2 pencil, paper towels, a small spray bottle. (Art centers typically have plastic water containers but feel free to bring your own.)

Brushes ? Two rounds (size 6 and 12-14) and one flat (size 1?) - synthetics or blends are fine. Nice extras include a large mop brush (size 12-16), a rigger, a fan brush.

Paints ? A little watercolor travel set, with blocks of paint is a good choice for beginners - as well as useful to have for all levels. They are usually 4?-6? long and have 12-20+ colors. Costs vary from $12 and up online or at local art/hobby stores.

The cover is a small palette and a small round brush is usually included.

Or, you can purchase individual paint tubes.

I usually use Windsor-Newton but other brands are fine. A little paint goes a long way in watercolor. A suggested minimum color palette includes warm and cool primaries* and a few extras. Please note that not all brands carry all colors or may call a similar color by a different name.

Warm Red* - such as Cadmium Red, Windsor Red, Permanent Red

Cool Red* - such as Alizarin Crimson, Quinacridone Rose, Permanent Rose,

Various Blues* ? such as French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Windsor Blue, Phthalo Blue

Warm Yellow* ? such as New Gamboge, Cadmium Yellow

Cool Yellow* - such as Lemon Yellow, Windsor Yellow, Aureolin

Green ? such as Sap Green, Phthalo Green, Hooker?s Green

Brown ? such as Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Burnt Umbra

Gold -such as Raw Sienna, Yellow Ochre or Quinacridone Gold Purple ? such as Windsor, Dioxazine VioletOrange ? such as Cadmium Orange Darks: such as Payne?s Gray, Windsor Blue, Prussian Blue or BlackTurquoise ?such as Cobalt TurquoiseMagenta
