About This Activity

Description

Civil War history surrounds us in western Loudoun and within our NOVA Parks region. Join historian & author Kevin Pawlak as he shares this history in his presentation, "Raised from Obscurity: The Cavalry Battles of Aldie, Middleburg, and Upperville on the Road to Gettysburg, June 17-21, 1863." This running line of battles from east to west along present-day Rt. 50 were the prelude to the Battle of Gettysburg just days later, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee tried to take the war north into Union lands. Learn just how instrumental these local fights were, in what would become some of the largest-scale cavalry battles in Civil War history. Following the lecture at Mt. Zion Historic Park (site of a hospital during the battles), visit Mt. Defiance Historic Park, site of much of the fighting during the Battle of Middleburg. No advanced registration required.
