Akron Portage 'n Paddle canoe and carry race celebrates Akron's heritage as the unique and revered sacred grounds where the nation's two water systems converge.
This fun and creative endurance sporting competition and community celebration follows the Towpath Trail from Nesmith Lake to Summit Lake and on to the locks of downtown Akron. The first part of the race will be paddling in canoes/kayaks, then competitors will have the opportunity to also get out of the water and carry (portage) their canoes/kayaks to the finish line.
Fee includes race participation, lunch, T-shirt, wooden engraved necklace. event promotional items from various vendors and free admission to Earth Day, Canoe Encampment, Portage lessons, Portage history talk workshop.
Different divisions compete together: Relay team of four, teams of two and individuals compete. Kayaks as well as canoes welcome. The total paddling mileage is 6.5 options for additional short portage (.5 mi.) or long portage (1.5 mi.).

PLEASE NOTE: Don't like the water? You can stay totally dry by participating on bicycle or hiking/walking/running along the Towpath, too. Sign up for the "PEDAL" or "PACE" options.

OPTIONAL Registration Pick-up: at Simon Perkins Stone Mansion on Friday, May 18 prior to race day from 4-7 pm including a Portage Trail History Talk by the Summit County Historical Society.
RACE DAY MAY 19
8-9:45 am Race Check-in for registration and packet pick-up at Nesmith Lake Park
10 am Start of Race
12-2 pm Race Finish and After Party in Cascade Valley
In the water (canoeing or kayaking) options: Nesmith Lake Park to Summit Lake to Spaghetti Warehouse
Out of the water (portaging) options: Downtown Towpath Trail to Lock 3 or carry on to Cascade Valley
Out of the water (peddle or pace) options: Follow the Towpath on bicycle or on foot
