What's Included

One session: Friday, November 4 Islam is often viewed as a backward religion that never fully reached modernity because it never went through stages equivalent to the Reformation or the Enlightenment. Prof. Griffel makes the point that such a view is wrong-guided and misunderstands Islamic societies. Based on his research in Islamic philosophy he argues that Islamic societies had developed in ways that wouldn't lead to Reformation or Enlightenment and that didn't really require them.
