Zumba?, it seems to be popping up everywhere. The term is all over Facebook, Internet ads and from conversations it's "the best."

What exactly is Zumba? More importantly, why is it is so popular?

The idea originated in the late 90s, by Alberto "Beto" Perez, in California, Colombia. Perez claims that the creation of Zumba was a "happy accident."

At the time he was an aerobics instructor and forgot his pop music for a morning class. He resorted to his music he had with him, which was a Latin America tape. Based on the salsa and merengue beats, he improvised some steps into traditional aerobics...Zumba was born and the craze rapidly grew.

Zumba is a dance workout based on Latin beats. In any class you will dance the salsa, merenegue, flamingo, hip hop and more. It's a full-body workout for any age, shape or size.

Why Is Zumba so Popular?

A Zumba enthusiast says, "it breaks up the monotony of the everyday workout for me; it's energetic and fun. The dances are easy to learn, the music is amazing and every time I go, everyone in the class is smiling. I think a lot of people enjoy dancing and if you know you're getting in shape while doing it, it makes it even better!"

You don't have to be a dancer or know how to salsa. All fitness levels are welcomed to join the dance party. The steps are simple to pick up and it's easy to stick to the program. Plus, you can burn anywhere from 500 to 800 calories in one hour. You'll burn fat and gain a lean body simply from a high energy dance class.
