Because nothing motivates us to stay healthy and active more than hearing stories of other athletic women, Her Sports
brings you Her Story, monthly profiles of women like you.
Meet Tammi Johnson -- an adventure-racing, mountain-biking code jockey who loves to shred the trails of the Sooner state.
Name: Tammi Johnson
Sports: Road biking, mountain biking, running, hiking, skiing
Age: 39
Occupation: Computer programmer
Where I live and play: Oklahoma City, Okla. Play all around Oklahoma and northern Texas.
Marital status: Married
Kids: Derrick, 17
Animals: Three rescued dogs: Amanda, Austin and Annie
First love: Biking. I loved it as a kid, and then about four years ago my son and I competed in an urban adventure race in Oklahoma City, and I got hooked again. Since then I have been road biking and have also fallen in love with mountain biking.
Favorite place to be active: I love to ride the back roads where I live and mountain bike on the trails by Stanley Draper Lake.
Role model & why: My friend, Candace, the other half of our two-woman adventure racing team called Cut 'n Code (she's a hairdresser and I'm a programmer). Candace stays very active, even though she suffers from rheumatoid arthritis. Watching her race, ride a bike or run in a 5K inspires me to stop whining and just do it.
Ideal active weekend: Completing a 12- to 18-hour adventure race, skiing or camping and hiking.
Proudest active moment: I've completed three Hotter 'N Hell Hundred road rides in Wichita Falls, Texas. But no matter what the race, every time we finish I'm proud of us as a team and as women.
Best training tip: Give yourself a day off from training once a week.
Gear I can't live without: My new Klein hardtail mountain bike.
Favorite pre-workout/race meal: Yogurt with granola, a banana and sports drink.
Sport I'd most like to try: Scuba diving.
When I'm not riding, running or hiking, I'm: Riding our motorcycle with my husband, going antiquing or reading.
