What's Included

Class Sequence and Design CHAW provides a comprehensive and sequential art experience that builds skills, fosters a love of arts, and expands artistic expression. Experienced and dedicated teaching artists encourage students to dream big, focus hard, and commit with passion while investigating a wide array of processes and techniques designed to nurture artistic development. Classes are organized by day, age, studio, and teaching artist. Projects, performances, themes, and processes vary from class to class and semester to semester, so there are always new techniques to learn, fresh and creative ideas to pursue, and skills to build upon. Each age group includes a Level I and Level II option, so no matter where your child enters the program—as a longtime YAP participant, brand new student, or somewhere in between—there will be an appropriately paced class that will feel both safe and challenging. Choose whether to stay on a track, gradually advancing to higher levels of a single medium, explore new disciplines, or mix and match—we will always meet kids where they are and help them discover ways to dive deeper, learn more, and work together to create a community within their classes and across the entire program.

About This Organizer

Tucked on a corner in the Eastern Market neighborhood of DC, CHAW has been Building community through the arts—and creating lifelong arts patrons and participants—for more than 40 years.  CHAW provides inspirational and creative programming for its Youth Arts (after-school and summer camp), Early Childhood, and Adult programs; in addition to producing and supporting public art projects, exhibitions, stage productions, performances, gallery talks, and other arts events throughout the year.  By encouraging and nurturing students and artists alike, CHAW delivers an authentic arts experience that leads to a stronger, more vibrant community—inside and outside our walls.  At CHAW, we are committed to direct action to bridge our community’s income gap: providing a space where adults and children from different racial, socio-economic, and geographic backgrounds can learn and play together.  No student is ever turned away for inability to pay: CHAW provided tuition assistance to 100% of need-based applicants in the 2013-2014 year to ensure equal access to quality arts education for every age and ability level.
