"Make it take it" is a drill that focuses on serve receive and offensive execution. Good teams can side out at a high percentage and they should turn freeballs into points. This drill gives a team an opportunity to work on siding out and converting on freeballs.
The goal of the serving side is to win the first rally they serve or at least one of the three balls so that the receiving side does not win the point. If they win two of three they will win a big point. The receiving side needs all three balls to win a big point.
If the receiving side wins two of three it is considered a wash and no side is credited with a point. The serving side can decide to be aggressive with the serve because they still have two chances of preventing a point.
Coaches can play around with rotations, match-ups, different patterns and serving strategies. It is a drill we use a lot to finish practice and work on offensive systems. The players also really enjoy it!"
Keys to the drill:
- Two sides of six players
- Serving side enters the ball and play out the rally
- Whoever wins the point gets a free ball and you play that ball out
- Serving team needs to win the serve and one free ball for a big point
- Receiving team needs to side out and win the next two balls for a big point
- Any other combination will result in a wash and the next serve is entered
