Brief Description

TRIATHLON begins with a 400 meter swim in an indoor pool. The 2nd leg is a 25K bike ride on city and country roads. The final leg is a 5K run on level, shaded cross country trail. DUATHLON begins with a 3K run on city streets and through the Wheeling Jesuit University campus. The 2nd leg is a 25K bike ride on city and country roads. Final leg is a 5K run on a level, shaded cross country trail. Both events finish with a partial track lap to the finish line in front of the stadium bleachers.

Refund Policy

Athletes may request a refund of paid registration fees prior to the start of the race with documentation of any injury, illness or family situation that prevents participation in the race. Athletes may request that fees paid be held and transferred to next year's race if they are unable to participate in the event. If an event is not held the following year, the registration fee will be refunded.

Athletes may choose to transfer paid registration fees to another athlete prior to the close of registration for the event. Fees may not be transferred to another athlete after the close of registration, but refunds may be requested according to the policy. The organization will not refund transaction fees paid with online registration.

Additional Information

USAT Sanction for the Faith in Action Caregivers Triathlon / Duathlon on July 10, 2010 is pending.
-Check-in and pool warm up will be from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. at the McDonough Center on Saturday, July 10, 2010. There will be no check-in after 7:00 a.m.

-All participants must sign the USAT waiver at the time of check-in unless verification of membership in USAT is provided. To read the waiver prior to race day, visit www.usatriathlon.org or contact Faith in Action Caregivers at 304-243-5420.

-All athletes must present a photo ID at the time of check-in. NO ID, NO RACE, NO EXCEPTIONS. Athletes under age 18 must be accompained by a parent or legal guardian with a photo ID.

-A mandatory pre-race meeting for all athletes begins at 7:15 a.m. in the lobby of the McDonough Center.

-Helmets are required on the bike course.

-Refreshments are available throughout the race for all participants, spectators and volunteers.

-Child care is not available on the day of the race. Please plan to have someone care for children who are not participants in the race.

-Only participants are permitted in the Transition Area and the Pool Area. Children participating in the race may have one parent or legal guardian accompany them in the Transition Area or in the Pool Area. Spectators will be able to watch the swim event from the pool balcony.

-Awards will be presented after the race.
Professional timing services will be provided by George Frazier.

Individual athletes can compete in gender and age group divisions of "Under Age 20" and then in five-year increments. Individual athletes can also compete in gender based weight categories or clergy categories. Athletes can choose to compete on teams in the following competition categories: Faith Community, High School, Combined Age Under 100. Combined Age 101-150, Combined Age over 151, Business, Family, Civic/Service Club and Clergy.

No headphones or cell phones can be used during any part of the race.
No drafting is permitted on the bike course.
No running is permitted in the Pool or the Transition Area.

TRIATHLON ONLY -- The race begins at 7:30 a.m. with the first wave of the swim event. Wet suits are permitted in the pool. Waves begin every 12 minutes with the slowest estimated overall time in the first wave. WAVE ASSIGNMENTS CAN NOT BE CHANGED ON RACE DAY.

DUATHLON ONLY -- The race begins at 7:45 a.m. with a group start outside the Transition Area.

BOTH RACES -- Prizes for both events are awarded to the top three overall finishers in each race by gender. The top three finishers in all competition categories will receive trophies. All athletes who complete the race will receive a medal. The age group of a participant will be determined by the age on December 31, 2010 and not by age on race day.

TEAM COMPETITION -- One team member completes each leg of the race. Relay teams can consist of two or three individuals. A registration must be received for each member of the team.

Athletes who are not members of USAT must pay a $10 fee to cover one-day membership. This is built into the registration fee. Please note that this is membership for the day of the race only.

Register 10 or more members from one faith community, club, business, family or other organizational group at the same time and receive a $5 per person (or $10 per team) discount when registrations are submitted together. Group registrations can be for either the triathlon or duathlon or a combination and apply to either individual registrations, relay teams or a combination.

Volunteers are needed on the day of the race to help with traffic control. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. When contacting by email, please enter "triathlon volunteer" in the subject line. Race volunteers receive a t-shirt to wear the day of the race and a gift bag.

Volunteers are available throughout the race to provide support and instruction to athletes. Athletes will recognize volunteers as those wearing bright green t-shirts.

Traffic control for the race is provided by volunteers in cooperation with the Wheeling Police Department, the Wheeling Fire Department, the Ohio County Sheriff's Office and the Triadelphia Volunteer Fire Department. Communications for the event are provided by the Ohio County Ham Radio Operators.

TRIATHLON RACE COURSE -- The 400 meter swim (16 lengths or 8 laps) will be in the indoor pool at the McDonough Center on the WJU campus. The 25 K bike course will exit WJU onto Currie Drive, turn left onto Washington Avenue, right onto Route 40 East (National Road), travel east approximately 2 miles to Lumber Avenue and continue along Lumber Avenue to the Shilling Bridge. Then turn left into the Elm Grove Crossing Mall and continue through the parking lot to Krause Drive. Turn right onto Krause Drive and then left onto Route 40 East. Follow Route 40 and make a right turn onto Middle Creek Road for about 3 miles to the turnaround at Union Hill Road. The same route is followed back to campus. The 5 K run (3 laps) will take place on the cross country trail on the WJU campus and finish with a partial lap on the track.

DUATHLON RACE COURSE -- The 3 K run begins at the Transition Area and exits the campus on Currie Drive. Runners turn right onto Washington Avenue and proceed to the main WJU entrance. At the top of the hill runners turn right at the Robert C. Byrd NTTC (Parking B) and follow the road into Parking I and past the Acker Science Center. Then run down the hill in front of Ignatius Hall. At the bottom of the hill turn left onto Ignatian Way and follow the road past the stadium to the Parking D (Adminsitration Parking) in front of the John and Mary McShane Admissions Center. Run through the parking lot and enter the trail behind the stadium track and tennis courts and follow the path to the Transition Area. DO NOT USE THE CROSS COUNTRY TRAIL ON THIS LEG OF THE RACE. The 25 K bike course will exit WJU onto Currie Drive, turn left onto Washington Avenue, right onto Route 40 East (National Road), travel east approximately 2 miles to Lumber Avenue and continue along Lumber Avenue to the Shilling Bridge. DIRECTIONS: Wheeling Jesuit University is located off Interstate 70 at Exit 2B (Washington Avenue). From the exit, follow the signs to the main entrance of Wheeling Jesuit University on your left. Wheeling, West Virginia is located about 60 miles west of Pittsburgh, PA and 130 miles east of Columbus, OH.

COURSE CHANGE POLICY: Faith in Action Caregivers, Inc. reserves the right to change the course of the race prior to the start of the race due to unexpected weather conditions, traffic control problems or other situations that may affect the safety of participants, spectators and volunteers. Any changes will be announced at the pre-race meeting at 7:15 a.m. on race day.

Faith in Action Caregivers, Inc. provided more than 10,000 hours of assistance to older adults and people with disabilities during 2009. More than 1,260 individuals received help from the organization in 2009. The most frequently requested service is escorted transportation to medical appointments in the local area as well as to Pittsburgh, Morgantown and Columbus. All services are provided without charge to the receiver regardless of income level. Services include escorted transportation, shopping, errands, household chores, yard work, assistance with personal record keeping, reading mail, friendly visiting, reassurance phone calls, respite for family caregivers and a home-based exercise program. Faith in Action Caregivers, Inc. is supported through the generosity of individual and corporate donors, faith communities, local foundations and special event fund raising projects. Sanctioning

USA Triathlon is the national governing body for the sports of triathlon, duathlon, winter triathlon and aquathlon in the United States. Participation in a USAT sanctioned event means the event director has the proper permits in place, liability and athlete excess medical insurance coverage and the event plan has met the standard of organization required.
