We are excited to announce the the Southern California Youth Tri Series will be a part of the Spring Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon in 2012. A Brand New USA Triathlon sanctioned youth triathlon race series for kids from 7-15 years old sponsored by the Triathlon Club of San Diego! The series will feature safe, fun, age-specific distances at high quality events supported by the national USA Triathlon organization.

Youth Tri Series Information

USA Triathlon Certified Coaches Andy Concors and Judy Carbary will offer Open Water Swim and Pre-Race Clinics to prepare your child for their race course, know USA Triathlon Safety Rules, and have fun with friends. Participants will learn everything they need to know and do to perform their best and progress their skills throughout their triathlon season. Series Points will be given for participation in the races and the clinics.

2012 Race Features

The 2012 race features chip timing and a post-race party with refreshments, live entertainment and an awards ceremony. ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE A TECHNICAL T-SHIRT, FINISHER PIN AND "VIRTUAL GOODIE BAG".

Race Distances:

Itsy Bitsy Triathlon: (7-10 Yrs Only)
100 meter swim, 3 mile Bike, 1/2 mile run

Mini Sprint: (11-13 Yrs Only)
200 meter swim, 6 mile bike, 2.5K run

Sprint Triathlon (14-15 Yrs Only)
1/4 swim, 9 mile bike, 5K run

The Course

The races start and finish at South Shores Park located on the south side of Mission Bay, just east of Sea World. The swim is in a protected cove at South Shores Park Triathletes start and finish at the boat launch ramp completing a U-shaped course. . All athletes bike around Fiesta Island. The run will be on walkways and an off-road dirt trail.

Mandatory Pre-Race Check In

All athletes (with one parent or legal guardian) must attend the pre-race check-in to pick up their own race materials. Athletes will have their parent or guardian sign the waiver and pick up their timing chip, race numbers, swim cap, and t-shirt. We do not allow friends or family members to pick up athlete's materials. Parent/Guardian ID is mandatory at the expo. Check is at a TBD location in San Diego on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

Race Series Award Points

All Youth who participate in a race will receive 1 point toward awards for the series. To be elligible to receive an award for the series, a participant must complete 4 out of 5 races in the series. Age groups and points divisions are listed below.

Award and Age Group Information

Spring Sprint Triathlon awards will be given for the top 3 finishers in age male and female age division as follows.

Itsy Bitsy Sprint:
7-8 year olds
9-10 year olds

Mini Sprint:
11-13 year olds

Sprint Triathlon:
14-15 year olds

Youth Tri Series Points Breakdown

Points will be awarded for the following age groups for each distance.
Itsy Bitsy Sprint:
7-8 year olds
9-10 year olds

Mini Sprint:
11-13 year olds

Sprint Triathlon:
14-15 year olds

Points will be awarded as follows:
1st place: 4 points
2nd place: 3 points
3rd place: 2 points

These points will be in addition to the earned 1 point for participating in the race.

USAT Membership

All youth participants must be an annual USA Triathlon member to participate in the Series. Visit http://www.usatriathlon.org to join or renew your child's annual youth membership for $5 for the current year. If your child is not USAT Youth member, but would still like to register, please select that you are NOT a USAT member when registering. This will charge the ONE DAY USAT Youth fee.

Sanctioning

USA Triathlon is the national governing body for the sports of triathlon, duathlon, winter triathlon and aquathlon in the United States.
