Brief Description

The 5th Annual ECOthon is a sprint style adventure race with swimming, biking, running & paddling. A unique fundraising event, the ECOthon is a journey throughout South Carolina's barrier islands of Capers, Dewees, Isle of Palms & Sullivans, near historic Charleston. The ECOthon is ultimately an adventure providing the opportunity to connect with nature, although there is a competitive option for those who wish. Don't let reality hold you back, live strong & create your own!

 

COURSES & DIVISIONS

The 5th Annual ECOthon is designed to highlight Capers Island 'boneyard' beach and the diverse ecosystem of the beautiful Barrier Islands of Charleston. The 35 mile ENDURANCE course is to be completed solo or continuously as a 2-person or 3-person team. The 23 mile SPRINT course is to be completed as a 2-person relay. Both start around 7:30 sunrise at the Isle of Palms Marina.

 

ENDURANCE Course ~ 35 mile SOLO or TEAM

~PADDLE 3 miles on Intracoastal Waterway to south end of Dewees Island by kayak, canoe, paddle board or whatever as long as human powered ~RUN 2 miles up Dewees beach ~SWIM 1/4 mile inlet to Capers Island ~RUN 3 miles up Caper's boneyard beach ~CHECKPOINT returning in opposite direction to the IOP Marina. ~BIKE 18 miles across Breach Inlet bridge to Sullivans Island past Fort Moultrie before returning to the IOP Marina.

 

SPRINT Course ~ 23 miles as 2 person relay

~PADDLE 3 miles on Intracoastal Waterway to south end of Dewees Island by kayak, canoe, paddle board or whatever as long as human powered ~RUN 2 miles up Dewees beach ~SWIM 1/4 mile inlet to Capers Island ~RUN 3 miles up Caper's boneyard beach ~TAG relay partner to return in opposite direction to the IOP Marina. ~BIKE 15 miles together across Breach Inlet bridge to Sullivans Island past Fort Moultrie before returning to the IOP Marina ~A scenic ferry ride will be provided for relay teams.

 

ENTRIES

Entries are limited to 100 participants. Once registered there will be no refunds even if a storm event. Remember, you'll be creating good karma because its a charitable fundraising event!

 

PRIZES

Prizes awarded to top 3 finishers in each division. Much thanks to generous sponsors!

 

SCHEDULE

Sat, Oct 24, 6:30 pm @ Isle of Palms Marina for Prerace meeting re: course & safety review as well as kayak orientation. Sun, Oct 25, 6:30 am @ IOP Marina to setup bike transition with 7:30 am START after sunrise.

 

GEAR ~ required & options

Coast Guard Type III personal floatation device (PFD), a whistle to be worn both during the paddle and swim sections. However, may waive required PFD during the swim depending on conditions, but whistle is absolute. Also, the swimming sections are separated by running sections, so amphibious type shoes are recommended and fins are allowed but must be carried during the runs. Helmets must be worn properly before leaving transition area and on the entire course until crossing finish line.

 

KAYAK RENTALS

From Coastal Expeditions (884-7684), tell them you're in the ECOthon to get a discounted rate & you'll also be provided a PFD & a whistle. They'll also bring the equipment to the start & pick it up, so no hassle.

Please use Mogan Creek Grill's gravel overflow lot, NOT ON PAVEMENT. This is to prevent Morgan Creek Grill's guests from an inconvenience and to be more gracious to our sponsor.

The ECOthon genuinely wishes to empower people to strengthen the belief in themselves and their natural capabilities to achieve their dreams! Previous ECOthons have donated over $10,000 to improving the lives of Tibetans around the world as well as many people affected by cancer. The entry fee is $80 per participant ($85 after Sept 26 & $90after Oct 10) that includes an ECOthon t-shirt, sponsors' gifts & prizes, a post-race awards party, and the opportunity to participate in a distinctly unique event!
