Brief Description

The Heart Rate Based Training clinic will introduce triathletes to basic training concepts and using heart rate as a means of measuring workout intensity. We will also discuss heart rate training zones and the scientific principles underlying training in zones. Finally, we will discuss the VO2 max test (metabolic analysis) and how an athlete can use the results to properly train with a heart rate monitor.

What you will learn

Attendees of this workshop will learn (1) the basic training principles of adaptation, specificity, and periodization; (2) the physiological effects of training and the meaning of “ZONES”; and (3) metabolic analysis (the VO2 max test) and its role in heart rate-based training.

About the instructor

Matt Wolfe holds BS and PhD degrees in biochemistry. He spent 4 years as a post-doctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Intermediary Metabolism, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health. Matt developed an interest in biochemistry and physiology as it relates to endurance training when he began competing in triathlon in 2005.

Clinic times and duration

This 90 minute clinic will be offered at 11:30AM.

Location

This workshop is part of the Multisport World Conference and Expo and will be held in the Film Room within the Hanley Center for Athletic Excellence at Georgetwon Prep.
