What's Included

Proteins are considered the workhorses of the cell. They are products of the transcription/translation process that permeate all aspects of the cell, from being the basis of structural scaffolds to being mediators in cell communication. In this course, students will learn how to clone a gene and fuse it to GFP (green fluorescent protein), as well as express and purify the protein. GFP has been a revolutionary tool in biology and we will discuss the impact that it has had. The students will also be given an introduction to protein biochemistry and learn how to use tools for visualization of protein structures.

About This Organizer

Science Explorations offers fun, innovative and engaging camp programs designed to inspire youth and discover science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  Based out of the Faculty of Science at York University, our camp programs use an discovery and inquiry-based learning approach that is focused on ‘learning by doing’. Our outreach model provides campers also get a chance to work in small groups on a variety of projects that will help foster problem solving, critical thinking, and an overall passion for STEM.

Our camp takes place within the Faculty of Science at the Keele Campus of York University. Within the university environment, this gives campers the unique opportunity to learn and discover the amazing world of science and engineering . In each of our programs, whether in day-long workshops or  week-long camps, we enrich the learning experience with laboratory visits, faculty presentations, workshops and demonstrations from student groups, and much, much more!
