The physical, magical and expressive beauty of flowers, as well as their metaphorical significance, has been an endless inspiration to artists throughout history. Artist from East to West have used flowers as a tool for self expression. In this class, students will explore techniques and concepts of floral painting with an emphasis on individual development of style and theme. We will investigate various approaches to both representational and abstract floral painting. We will work from flower arrangements in the classroom and in the landscape to discover how a basic image can be transformed into a personal statement. Students will be encouraged to experiment with ideas and techniques with the purpose of developing their own personal voice. During power point presentations in the class, works of old master and contemporary artists will be analyzed and discussed to complement students’ own projects. This course is designed for artists both abstract and representational in all levels.
