A hands-on workshop to experience the magic of forging basic forms. Learn simple blacksmithing techniques as you hand forge a three-dimensional half moon design, which can function as a hair stick or letter opener, or be added to a more advanced project. After a one-hour demo, students will get to work designing and forging their own pieces, receiving constant guidance from the instructor. Students who progress beyond the original project are invited to move on to a more advanced piece of their own design. All students will learn about tools handling and techniques, and come away with basic forging skills. Note: Metal will be provided in several sizes, but if students have their own materials or a forging project already in progress, they are encouraged to bring these to class. * This class will be held offsite at Steep Rock Studio, in Sawpit, CO. A member of the California Blacksmith Association, California resident Joy Brenneman is a certified instructor who is visiting Telluride for a work residency. Heavy jeans or sturdy pants, long sleeves, closed toed shoes, and eye protection are required, as well as earplugs and leather gloves. All necessary forging tools will be provided, but if students have their own they are encouraged to bring those as well. Tools include, a hammer, tongs, hot cut, and chisel. Class location: #1 Steeprock Rd, Placerville CO 81430 (across from Sawpit Store) Students should park at the bottom of the road where the tin shed is located. Joy will meet students here and walk them up to the studio.
