For four weeks, indulge yourself in the magical world of batik on silk. Focusing first on making a set of prayer flags or composite scarf, students will learn about color, surface design, silk painting, wax resist, shibori, and more, using dyes that are appropriate for silk, wool and fabric blends that contain silk and wool. Classes meet two evenings a week, plus there's optional open studio time with the instructor on three Saturdays and three Sundays. All pieces will be dry cleaned to remove the wax (budget $8 per piece for dry cleaning.) A week or two after the final class meeting, students will meet again to dye set their pieces. The course materials fee includes seven scarves/ fabric pieces. Kathy will have lots of extra scarves and fabric on hand for students to purchase separately. This course is geared toward those with previous fabric dyeing experience, and limited to six students.
