The purpose of the session is to help the students understand and experience/execute a deeper approach to painting a still life. We will discuss and explore how composition, line, pattern, and color relationships all serve to create a profoundly poetic message in still life. We will paint a new painting each day. The subject for the whole week will be a single object that each person brings in. This object should be meaningful in a personal way and capable of portraying (symbolically) a personal narrative or world view. How this is possible will be our shared exploration. The second week will be focused on a single vase and flowers supplied by each student. Again, a new painting will be produced each day with the intention to keep deepening our ability to let this subject carry a larger and more personal message than how it reads just by itself in life. We will paint in acrylic on large sheets of paper. If students prefer to bring in canvas and/or oil paints, that is acceptable as well.
