Divers Alert Network (DAN), an international scuba diving safety and training organization, has added a new form of training: A video lecture series. The video series joins DAN's online seminar series and its real-time webinars.
The new video series features popular lectures given by various members of the DAN staff, with topics ranging from questions frequently asked of the DAN Medical Information department to safety issues. Each presentation is approximately 40 minutes in duration, an ideal length for those wishing to watch the lectures in a group setting such as a dive club meeting or continuing education course.
"We're very pleased to be able to offer these presentations as a video lecture series," says Nicholas Bird, M.D., DAN CEO and chief medical officer. "Many of them have been given in public venues over the last year, and each has been extremely well received. The number of attendees at the live lectures demonstrated divers' desire for the knowledge the presentations offered, and so we wanted to find a way to make that information available on a much broader scale."
The first video of the series is "Medications and Diving," presented by Dr. Bird. The lecture provides an up-to-date approach to the issue of medications and diving, emphasizing a systematic approach to evaluating medical fitness to dive questions for divers who are either taking or will take medications."The great thing about this video series is there's virtually no limit to the number of topics we can cover or the number of videos in the series itself," says Bird. "We plan to develop additions as long as divers indicate they want them, and we certainly encourage anyone with suggestions or a specific topic request to provide us feedback."
At least two more offerings are scheduled for release before the end of the year: "Diver Fatalities: How Good Divers Get Into Bad Trouble," presented by Dan Orr, DAN president; and "How Good Is Your Emergency Plan?" with Marty McCafferty, DAN medical information specialist.
"One of the best ways divers can increase their level of safety is to increase their knowledge," says Bird. "Smart divers never stop learning. Knowing this, DAN has not and will not stop finding ways to make useful information easily accessible to divers."
All online seminars are free to DAN Members, and access is automatically included with DAN Membership. To access the seminars, simply visit them online and log in as a DAN Member.
