Coughlin is a two-time Olympian and world record holder. At the 2004 Athens Olympics she won five medals, including gold in the 100m Backstroke and 4x200m Freestyle Relay.
In 2008, Coughlin went to the Beijing Olympics as a co-captain of the U.S. women's team. There, she became the first American female athlete to win six medals at one Olympic Games. She also successfully defended her gold medal in the 100m Backstroke.
