Brief Description

5th Annual Salem Harbor Open Water Swim. Everyone loves this event! Races for all ages and levels: 500 meters, 1500 meters, and 5K. Entry fees include great food (catered by Finz Restaurant), music, tee shirts, giveaways, activities for kids, and free entry to the park. Proceeds benefit Salem Sound Coastwatch, a non-profit environmental organization working to keep our North Shore beaches and coastal waters clean and healthy. This event is co-sponsored by the North Shore YMCA Sharks Swim Team.

Races

500 meter: triangular course. 1.5K (1500 meters): one lap around a rectangular course. 5K: two laps around a 2.5K rectangular course. In-water start for all races.

Sanctioning and Insurance

This event is sanctioned by USA Swimming and US Masters. Participants who are not members must pay a one-event membership fee of $10. USA Swimming event sanction number is NE-10-77-0. USMS event sanction number is 041-025-SOWS.

Wetsuits

Wet suits are allowed for USMS Swimmers if water temperatures do not exceed 78 degrees (mean temperature for this time of year is 68 degrees). Swimmers wearing wetsuits will compete in a separate class.

Awards

Awards will be by age class and wetsuit category.

Tee Shirts

To be guaranteed a tee shirt, you must register by August 15.

Weather

There is no rain date. The swim will be canceled only if absolutely necessary for the safety of participants.

If You Bring Your Families

Families can picnic and enjoy the wooded Forest River Park. The park has 2 beaches, walking paths, playground, and facilities. Salem Sound Coastwatch will also have some interesting exhibits of local marine life.

Directions

Forest River Park is near Salem State College. Turn east (towards the water) onto West Avenue at the intersection of Loring Avenue and Lafayette Street (Lafayette St is Route 1A and Route 114). You will see a sign for Pioneer Village. West Ave. will dead end in a few blocks at Forest River Park.
