What's Included

The VEX 1 camp is one week long and introduces rising 6th through 12th grade students to competitive robotics through the VEX robotics design system. This camp is perfect for students that have never done robotics and want to learn the basics of the VEX robotics platform. In groups of 3-4, students will build and program a robot to operate on a field by remote control and through an autonomous program. The teams will compete in a final camp competition Thursday afternoon. Additionally students will learn basic computer programming in robotC by programming a robot to complete challenges throughout the week. The importance of STEM education and opportunities to pursue STEM during the school year will be shared with students and parents.

About This Organizer

SySTEMic Solutions is Northern Virginia Community College’s STEM outreach program. We’re passionate about developing a pipeline of student-centered activities from elementary school to career, building the STEM workforce of the future in the process.

The core underpinnings of a competitive economy are the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Northern Virginia faces a critical shortage of skilled workers in these areas and SySTEMic Solutions is focused on changing this.

The SySTEMic Solutions mission is to develop a sustainable STEM pipeline in Northern Virginia. We engage students in elementary school and inspire them to continue to pursue STEM education in high school, college and the workforce through a collaboration with schools, businesses and community organizations.

We have developed partnerships with school divisions, higher education institutions, employers, and chambers of commerce throughout Northern Virginia to create a sustainable workforce pipeline.

Various activities, such as summer STEM camps, career exploration, competitive robotics and STEM dual enrollment are being delivered to participating teachers and students and are built on the critical need for a hands-on, activity based approach to learning STEM through collaboration and innovative teaching methods.

In the end, it’s about relationships, inspiration and skill. If we can capture the minds of young students and inspire them in STEM, then we have established a great platform for excellence, personal career satisfaction, and relationships made and maintained that will foster a desire for students and professionals to remain in Northern Virginia to achieve their dreams in the STEM fields.
