About This Activity

There has been more than our share of sorrow in the high schools of Baldwin County. This sorrow is the result of students and adults choosing to end their life prematurely. Statistics show that approximately 10 people successfully commit suicide annually for every 100,000 people in an area. The population of Baldwin County is around 186,000. If statistics hold true then we can expect 20 people from Baldwin County to die due to suicide in 2013. The students in the Torobotics Engineering Club are passionate about reducing that number. The Suicide Prevention 5k is a part of that change.

The race would be scheduled for April 14, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The purpose of the 5k is to raise money for the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation. This group sponsors a number of programs that work to prevent suicide throughout Baldwin County.

The run would cover a route that starts at the front of the school, goes up the hill to the stadium, turns right and follows around the outside of the stadium parking lot, up the hill behind the stadium, down the hill, right at the stop sign, right onto 181, to the red light, turn around at the light, and run back to the school, the finish line will be between the stop signs at the front of the school.

The route symbolizes the stages and struggles of life. The hills along the route are a challenge and are a metaphor for the difficulties of life. Once you are at the top of the hill or through the problem you can more clearly realize your achievement. All along the route we will have roadside signs that have inspirational sayings, poems, and information to encourage the participants. There will be a number of freestanding stations that represent the key demographic groups that often choose suicide as a method of escape. These will include veterans, teens, new mothers, middle age and elderly men, young homosexuals, and native Americans. These stations will provide an opportunity for participants to increase their understanding of the challenges that these groups face. We will also will allow individuals to sponsor a pair of shoes to symbolize someone they have lost due to suicide. These shoes will be placed along the route with markers to commemorate the lost. The Club hopes that the visual imagery of conquering the hills, reading the signs and completing the race will be powerful enough to stick with the participants and positively influence them to choose life.

The theme of the race is "It is worth finishing the race". This applies to the 5k and the race of life. It will cost participants $25.00 to register for the race. Each participant will receive a t-shirt and a bracelet reminding him or her You are Worth It!
