What's Included

Textile & Fiber Arts: Taught in Mandarin Chinese Students will learn the basics of textile and fiber art techniques while being introduced to new vocabulary and being immersed in Mandarin. Processes such as sewing, screen printing, embroidery, wool felting, basket weaving, dying, stamping and fabric painting will be introduced. Our expert, bilingual staff is trained in textiles & fiber art and in making learning a new language a fun and interactive adventure! Projects may include the following: drawstring bags decorative pillows screen-print T-shirts embroidery wool felted stuffies basket weaving Students will learn to design, plan and execute their ideas from an abstract notion into a tangible product. Helium Network’s Carroll Colette J. Yorgey explains why these skills are so vital to our children’s development: “A person who can sew reads the pattern instructions. Teaching your child to read pattern instructions is good training in reading and can lead to other types of instructional reading such as engineering, drafting, design and architecture. Sewing is related to fine motor skills. Using a scissors, using a needle and threading the needle are all fine motor skills. Sewing is good for the developing child and even for the handicapped child who may need practice in motor skills. Using the sewing machine gets children familiar with machinery. Learning to sew a straight line is similar to driving a car. Using the pedal is similar to the gas and brake pedals in a car. Learning to manipulate the sewing machine can teach eye/hand coordination and foot coordination. It is also related to brain functioning such as using the brain for multi-tasking.” When: Wednesdays: 5:00 – 6:00 Where: 55 Nursery Way, SSF October Dates: 10/7, 10/14, 10,21, 10,28 November Dates: 11/4, 11/18, 11/25 (no class 11/11) December Dates: 12/2, 12/9, 12/16, 12/23, 12/30
