Children are one of the very best audiences for stories. But writing books for children means many things. Picture books, chapter books for early readers, middle grade fiction, and young adult novels all require specific understanding of your story’s audience and the expectations of the publishing marketplace. This class will focus on the techniques and requirements of creating books for children, including length, tone, characters, voice, age-appropriate word choice and more. Participants may bring in their own projects or work on suggested assignments from the instructor. You’ll also discuss the world of children’s publishing, including writing query letters, signing with an agent, and the intricacies of getting your children’s stories into the world.
