Introduction to Fingerstyle Guitar-Part 1 with Yvonne Desrosiers (8 weeks) will focus upon building a strong foundation. The curriculum will be adjusted to each student’s rate of progress. Goals and Objectives: -Introduce basic fingerstyle method and how it combines bass and melody lines within arrangements to create a solo guitar instrumental performance. -Picking and fretting hand language and techniques. -Thumb, index, middle and ring finger picking techniques. -Smooth and economical transitions between notes and chords. -Posture and hand positioning -Hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, glissandos -Developing finger muscle memory, exploring alternating bass patterns and organizing productive practice sessions. -Introduction to arpeggios, a variety of picking patterns, applying the use of the metronome to improve timing Two Fingerstyle arrangements will be presented for practice. They include “Freight Train” and “Scarborough Faire”. Students who take this course will have an easier time if they can at least play the first position chords: C, G, D, A, E, full F, 1/2 F, G7, E7,D7 G7, A7, B7 , F#m, Am, Em, Bm, C#m, and Am and can read guitar tablature. This knowledge is not required although and chord charts will be available. Materials needed: guitar, tuner, capo, pencil (with eraser), note paper, and a willingness to practice outside of the designated class time. A metronome for home practice is helpful. Please arrive 5-15 minutes early to warm up and setup for class to start on time.
