From Zion to Capitol Reef
with Kathryn Stats
Oct 8 - 13, 2013
This workshop is for those with some experience in landscape painting who wish to focus on issues particular to plein air painting in oils. Focus issues will be the selection of the subject, design of the canvas and blocking in of value pattern. We will explore color combinations and how they can be used to create the effect of aerial or atmospheric perspective to make a convincing sense of depth. Over the five day workshop Kathryn will demonstrate numerous times. On one of these occasions she will use a previously started piece to focus on the finishing process.
Vince Fazio director of the School of the Arts will assist students throughout the Field Expedition managing relationships with the parks, logistics and time management assuring that each student receives the attention and input they need to take their landscape painting to the next level.
Oct 8 & 9 -The first 2 days we'll spend painting within Zion National Park with the first painting session being conducted on the grounds of the museum within the park. Starting at 9am with an orientation and demonstration. Students will book their own lodging in Springdale or nearby areas.
Oct 10 - The 3rd day at Zion will be near the park taking in a broad vista 'looking in' from one of Kathryn's favorite spots.
Oct 11 - Day 4 is a 'free day' of traveling between Zion and Capitol Reef National Park. Checking in at the Howard Johnson's near the entrance to the Park after 3pm. Three nights lodging is included with tuition.
Oct 12 & 13 -These two days will be spent exploring and painting this unique terrain with Kathryn featuring deep canyons, intimate crevices and facing grand walls of rock with raking light.
