What's Included

Science and Medicine are advancing at a fast pace, and it seems like science fiction is quickly becoming science fact. Have you ever thought, "How is that possible?" Thanks to cutting-edge computational biology and bioinformatics, that future is now. Delve into the world of genomics, proteomics, genetic sequencing, and other next-gen sciences and immerse yourselves in a universe of infinite possibilities. The students in this camp learn about bioinformatics techniques, learn to use powerful databases and tools, and explore cutting-edge computational biology research relating to biotechnology and medicine. This dry lab comes with an introduction to bioinformatic tools like BLAST, which gives campers insight into studying protein sequences, conducting comparative analysis of sequences, and the application of computational biology in biomedical research. It will teach the students how mutations can radically change the structure of the proteins, which is a key point in developing personalized medicine.

About This Organizer

The Northwest Association for Biomedical Research is a 501 c3 non-profit membership/educational organization established in 1989 to promote the public understanding of the implications and applications of biomedical research. Our work centers on supporting excellence in science teaching, building connections between scientists and students, and strengthening the research community.

Vision: NWABR is the Northwest’s leading voice for understanding and integrity in biomedical research

NWABR Mission: Promotes the understanding of biomedical research and its ethical conduct

Mission advances the understanding and support of biomedical research by:

  • promoting awareness of the values, principles and ethical issues in biomedical research
  • empowering citizens and leaders to make informed choices about biomedical research
  • building community across the Northwest’s scientific and educational institutions
  • creating an environment where research flourishes
  • NWABR Camp BIOmed is inspired by the success of our former NIH SEPA funded Student Research Fellows program (https://www.nwabr.org/events-programs/student-events/student-research-fellows), our goal is to inspire students to consider a career in biomedicine, biotechnology or bioengineering through immersion in the biomedical research community.

At NWABR our Camp BIOmed is a core education program as the educational experience provides the opportunity for NWABR and its carefully selected partners to inspire young people (grades 10-12) to formulate their understanding of biomedical research and its ethical conduct.
