During this session campers will learn how to prepare for a hike and how to stay safe in the wilderness. We will talk about natural hazards and what to do if you do get lost. Campers will learn the four points on a compass and a map and how to identify north without a compass. We will explore map reading, types of maps, orienteering, shelter making, fire safety, and the importance of attitude in a survival situation. Each camper will have the opportunity to make a nature journal and a yucca paintbrush. We will draw maps of our adventures, recording points of interest (to increase awareness about our route), and observations of the natural world through art, sit spots and sound maps. Due to this themes popularity, we will offer it three times this summer! Children who wish to do it more than once will deepen their skills and become teachers for the other children. Each week brings new adventures!
