Junior Group Lessons
Group Lessons for juniors are taught in 6 separate Sessions over the course of the summer:
- Session A: June 11 - June 15 (1 week only)
- Session B: June 18 - June 29
- Session C: July 2 - July 13
- Session D: July 16 - July 27
- Session E: July 30 - August 10
- Session F: August 13 - August 17
Junior Group lesson schedule:
- Morning lessons are from 9:00 AM to noon
- Afternoon lessons are from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
- Sailing Camp meets Monday through Thursday
- Levels 1 - 4 and Advanced Racing meet Monday through Friday
Adult Group Lessons:
- Weekly Afternoon Sessions, beginning June 11 through August 10, meet afternoons Monday-Friday 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
- Thursday Evening 4 week Session, from June 28 through July 19, meets Thursday evenings 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Thursday Evening 4 week Session, from July 26 through August 16, meets
Thursday evenings 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Thursday Evening 8 week Session, from June 28 through August 16, meets Thursday evenings 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
Sailing Camp
Offered as an introductory course for any child who has completed 1st but who has not yet completed 3rd grade. Students will learn the basics of sailing and safety on the water. This is a preparatory course for the remainder of the junior program, but is not a required prerequisite course.
Level 1 Sailing
Offered for students who have completed 2nd grade but who are not yet 13 years old. Students will learn sailing vocabulary, parts of the boat, parts of the sail, basic rigging, safety, finding the wind, some right of way rules, some sailing knots and more. Sailing Camp is not a prerequisite for Level 1 Sailing. A separate Level 1 Sailing class is offered in Sessions B through E in the afternoons for teens age 13 and older.
Level 2 Sailing
Offered for students who have completed 2nd grade and Level 1 Sailing and who are not yet 13 years old*. Students will expand their basic knowledge of sailing, tacking, jibing, three basic points of sail, safety, boat handling, additional sailing knots and more. A separate Level 2 Sailing class is offered in sessions B through E in the afternoons for teens age 13 and older.
Level 3 Sailing
Offered for students that have completed Level 2 Sailing*. Students will learn advanced rigging, reading the water, six points of sail, controlled jibe, sail trim, capsizing and person overboard techniques, docking, right-of-way rules, basic weather, additional knots and more.
Level 4 Sailing
Offered for students who have completed Level 3 Sailing*. Students will learn the physics of sailing, use of cunningham and boom vang, snap jibing, anchoring, coiling and throwing lines, advanced boat handling, race course setting, sailing a race course, use of a spinnaker and more. Passing the EYC skipper’s test to graduate from Level 4 entitles a student member to skipper a club-owned sailboat outside of supervised lessons and races.
Advanced Racing
Offered as an advanced racing course for any student who has completed Level 4 and has passed their EYC Skipper's Test*. Students will learn advanced racing tactics and rules, upwind and downwind tactics, mark rounding, racing rules, starting strategies, race course strategies, team racing tactics and much more. Students with a serious interest in racing should take this course.
Adult Afternoon Group Sailing
Offered in the afternoons (1:30 PM to 4:30 PM) 5 days a week in 1 week sessions for adults 18 years or older. Students will learn the basics of sailing in a fun, social and comfortable environment. Emphasis is placed on safety and boat handling and management. The goal is for students to independently, comfortably and safely skipper a sailboat.
Adult Evening Group Sailing
Offered Thursday evenings (5:00 PM to 8:00 PM) for either eight weeks or four weeks, for adults 18 years or older. Students will learn the basics of sailing in a fun, social and comfortable environment. Emphasis is placed on safety and boat handling and management. The goal is for students to independently, comfortably and safely skipper a sailboat.
Private Lessons
Offered by appointment. The instructor will assess and train the student(s) on sailing techniques needed. This is a great way to get a lot of instruction in a short period of time. Private lessons can be taken as an individual or small group.

EYC MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENT: All students must be 2012 EYC members. For any questions regarding Membership, please contact Nancy Claypool, Membership Chairman, at nclaypool@stonepigman.com
Junior Students: Each junior student must be either the child of a Family Member, or a Student Member. To join the EYC as a Family member, go to www.eyc.org/membership. Student memberships are purchased during the online lesson registration process.
Please note: Family Membership ONLY applies if the Family Member is the student’s parent or legal guardian and the student is under the age of 25. Status as the grandchild, houseguest, nephew or niece of a Family Member is not sufficient.
Adult Students: Adults can join the EYC as Family, Senior, or Single Members by going to www.eyc.org/membership. Adult students under age 25 can join as Student Members, purchased during the online lesson registration process.
CLASS SIZE LIMITATIONS: Registration does not guarantee participation in lessons. The EYC reserves the right to adjust class sizes to available facilities and instructors, in order to maintain safety and quality of instruction, which may result in the need to exclude any student, including those who have pre-registered. Any student so excluded will receive full refund.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Sailing Camp: The student must have completed first grade and must not have completed third grade.
- Level 1: The student must have completed 2nd grade and must not yet be 13 years old. Sailing Camp is not a pre-requisite for Level 1.
- Level 1 Teens Only: The student must be at least 13 years old. Sailing Camp is not a pre-requisite for Level 1.
- Level 2: The student must have completed 2nd grade and Level 1 and must not yet be 13 years old.
- Level 2 Teens Only: The student must be at least 13 years old and must have completed Level 1.
- Level 3: The student must have completed Level 2.
- Level 4: The student must have completed Level 3.
- Cruising: The student must have completed Level 4 and passed the EYC Skipper's Test.
- Advanced Racing: The student must have completed Level 4 and passed the EYC Skipper’s Test.
Note: For those transferring into the EYC program, placement will be made based on assessment at the start of the program.
REFUNDS: The EYC cannot refund lesson fees unless the withdrawing student’s slot is filled by another student and the class is full to capacity.
MAKE-UP DAYS: The EYC does not offer make-up days to students who miss class.
EQUIPMENT / CLOTHING: All students are required to wear a properly fitting, Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device (“PFD”) at all times during lessons when on the EYC pier or on a boat. The EYC does not provide PFDs for students. A student who does not bring his or her own PFD which fits properly will not be allowed to participate in lessons. Students are required to wear proper footwear with closed toes. Boat shoes or close-toed sport sandals are recommended. Flip-flop sandals are not permitted. Sailing gloves and sunglasses with a keeper strap are highly recommended. Students with prescription glasses must wear keeper straps. Parents should ensure students are dressed appropriately for sailing activity and for the expected weather, including cool weather, spray and/or rain.
SWIM ASSESSMENT: A swim assessment may be given at the beginning of each session, which may include a swim test in the water. Wear swimwear under clothing, and bring a towel. Students who do not know how to swim should not sign up for sailing lessons.
PROPER BEHAVIOR: All students and their parents are required to understand and adhere to the EYC Expected Rules of Behavior (Code of Conduct), posted in several places at the EYC and available for viewing at www.eyc.org/member-info. Although the EYC lesson program is designed to be lots of fun, it is educational in nature and not a day care service. Proper and safe behavior is expected of students at all times. Students who do not exhibit proper behavior, or who behave in an unsafe manner, are subject to expulsion, in which case no refund is required to be given. Parents, please discuss these expectations with your child.
TEXTBOOKS:
Each student in Level 1 through 4 is required to own a copy of the textbook “Learn Sailing Right”. Please note this is NOT the same as the textbook used by the EYC in 2010 and earlier, “Start Sailing Right”.
Each student in Advanced Racing is required to own the textbook "Performance Racing Tactics" by Bill Gladstone, published by North U. Students are strongly urged to purchase their own copy of this textbook prior to starting their Advanced Racing session. The "Learn Sailing Right" textbook also can be purchased from the EYC during the online registration process, or in person at the EYC for $10.
Please be sure to write the student’s name in permanent marker pen on the student’s textbook.
PARKING / STUDENT DROP OFF: Parents, for reasons of student safety and to help the EYC maintain good relations with its neighbors, please read and follow the EYC parking policy located at http://www.EYC.org/member-info. In particular, please never (1) drive down the EYC driveway, (2) drop off or pick up students in the driveway or on the shoulder of Hwy. 42, or (3) park in an Ephraim Yacht Harbor space which is not your space. Please park only in EYC-owned parking spaces or in the public parking lot located on Spruce Street.
JUNIOR ACTIVITIES: One of the highlights of the summer for children who have completed 1st grade is the Junior Activities Program. To make this possible, parent volunteers are essential. You will assist the weekly coordinators who have already volunteered to chair events. Please indicate on the application form whether you may be able to help with Junior Activities.
SUBMIT ONE ONLINE APPLICATION PER STUDENT PER SESSION Submit one online application per student. If a student wishes to enroll for more than one session, submit a separate online enrollment for each session.
SCHOLARSHIPS:
A limited number of need-based scholarships to help defray program cost are available. You do not need to be a current EYC member to apply for a scholarship. Do not proceed with on-line registration. To apply for a scholarship, please contact the EYC Scholarship Chairman scholarships@eyc.org.

REGISTRATION:
Advance registration is required for group lessons. Click the green "Register Now" button to sign up now for 2012 sailing lessons at the EYC. You will receive an email confirmation upon completion of registration; if you do not receive a confirmation, please check your junk mail filters, first. For private lessons, online signup is not available; call or stop by the EYC during the season to make an appointment.
