Brief Description

Washington, DC's premier springtime 8K marks the official start of the spring racing season! Come join us at Freedom Plaza for a day of family fun that includes: a great 8K; a deep awards structure; a 1K kids fun run; Irish dancing; fruit, bagels, cookies, and water near the finish line; and random prizes from businesses that are active in the running community.

Charity Beneficiary - Special Olympics DC

The official charitable partner for the 22nd Annual St. Patrick's Day 8K is Special Olympics DC. This organization strives to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for all children and adults with developmental disabilities. The goal is to bring all individuals with mental retardation into the larger society under conditions whereby they are accepted, respected, and given the opportunity to become happy and productive citizens.

Sign Up for an 8K Online Training program

The St. Patrick's Day 8K has teamed up with ActiveTrainer coaches to provide training plans specifically for this race. These plans are designed for athletes of ALL levels, from the first-timer all the way up to the most experienced athlete. Included with your training plan is an online calendar, reporting tools, training calculators, maps, daily emails, and much more!

Co-Ed Team Competition

Form a team to represent your company, running club, friends, or running partners. Teams may be composed of up to ten members with the fastest four scoring. Of the first four team finishers, one must be a man and one must be a woman.

Please note that there is a delay between the time you register and the time your name appears on the List. Strollers, baby-joggers, dogs, and headphones are not permitted on the 8K course. Please be considerate for the safety of this large group of athletes.

Award Categories

Awards to the first 10 finishers overall (male and female) and first 3 in the following divisions: 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80 & over. Awards ceremony will be on the stage at Freedom Plaza at the conclusion of the Irish dancing exhibition. Don't miss the Irish Dancers! Overall awards will be based on "clock time," and age group awards will be based on "net time."

About ChronoTrack Timing

Transponder timing operated by Capital Running Company will be used to score the 8K race. The system uses a computer "tag" which must be tied to each runners' shoelaces and records the exact time a runner crosses the starting line and the finish line, resulting in a net time for each runner. The D-tag is disposable. Overall awards will be based upon clock time and age group awards will be based upon transponder times.

Course

A new 8K course was developed in 2006 to conform to recent regulation and security changes for downtown courses. The course map is available on the race Web site.

On-Site Registration and Packet Pick-Up in DC

Register in person or pick up your packet Friday, March 12 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Old Post Office Pavilion, (12th & Pennsylvania Ave NW).
Please pick up your bib with the ChronoTrack disposable D-tag affixed and t-shirt on Friday if possible and make your race day experience more pleasant!

Picking up for your Friends and Relatives

We do allow runners to pick up bibs and t-shirts for their friends. Please note that t-shirts cannot be mailed. You will not need to show us your ID or copies of their ID to pick up for them.

Post-Race Refreshments and Entertainment

Bagpiper Mike Scott will perform once again on Pennsylvania Avenue to get runners into the spirit of Ireland. Young performers of the O'Neill-James School will provide a traditional Irish dancing exhibition after runners complete the course. Refreshments include fresh bagels from Chesapeake Bagel Bakery, fresh cookies, ripe bananas, and bottled water.

Leprechauns Leap

A 1K noncompetitive fun run just for children! The run will start near the 8K start/finish line immediately after the 8K start. No registration is necessary. Medals to all finishers! Look for all the smiling faces!

Metro Options

Metro opens at 7 am so you should have plenty of time to get to the race, register, or pick up your packet. Take the Red Line to Metro Center or the Blue/Orange Lines to Federal Triangle. Check wmata.com schedules for details.
