Brief Description

Proceeds from the second annual Prevent Cancer 5K™ will help support the Foundation’s important cancer prevention outreach, education programs and research. This is a great event just right for someone looking for a personal best or to enjoy the park with friends and family.

Please register before race day as the National Park Service does not allow for the collection of entry fees on Park property.

Sign Up for an Online Training Program

The Prevent Cancer Foundation 5K~Step Away From Cancer Run has teamed up with ActiveTrainer coaches to provide training plans specifically for this race. These plans are designed for athletes of ALL levels, from the first-timer all the way up to the most experienced athlete. Included with your training plan is an online calendar, reporting tools, training calculators, maps, daily emails, and much more!

Please note that there is a delay between the time you register and the time your name appears on the List.

Strollers, baby-joggers, dogs, and headphones are not permitted on the 5K course. Please be considerate for the safety of this large group of athletes.

T-shirts

The first 500 runners who register will receive an event t-shirt!

Age Groups and Awards

Our event has 10 year age groups as follows:11 and under, 12-19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and over.

The fastest three men and women overall will receive gift certificates of $100, $75, and $50 based upon their place. The top finisher in each of the age groups will get a $25 gift certificate. Random drawing prizes will also be awarded.

Thursday Packet Pick Up and Late Registration

You may pick up your race packets on Thursday at Sport&Health Regency Club-McLean 1800 Old Meadow Road McLean, VA 703-556-6550 10am-7pm

Friday Packet Pick up and Late Registration

You may pick up your race packets on Friday at Georgetown Running at 4461 Willard Ave., Chevy Chase, MD. Hours are 10am-7pm. Friendship Hghts. Metro (Red Line), free parking behind the store. This is your last opportunity to register for the race as there is no registration permitted by the National Park Service on Saturday. Store: 301-215-6355

Picking Up for Your Friends and Relatives

We do allow runners to pick up bibs and t-shirts for their friends. Please note that t-shirts cannot be mailed. You will not need to show us your ID or copies of their ID to pick up for them.

ChronoTrack Timing and Scoring

Transponder timing operated by Capital Running Company will be used to score the 5K race. The system uses a computer "tag" which must be tied to each runners' shoelaces and records the exact time a runner crosses the starting line and the finish line, resulting in a net time for each runner. The D-tag is disposable. Overall awards will be based upon clock time and age group awards will be based upon transponder times

Restricted Parking

There is no parking on Ohio Drive in West Potomac Park. There is no parking along Independence Avenue at any time.

Parking and Metro

Don't ride Metro to the race. Instead, look for side street parking north of Constitution Avenue NW between 18th-23rd Streets NW. Or, consider having a friend drop you off at 23rd & Constitution Avenue NW before the run, then ride Metro home.

If you must ride the Metro, it opens at 7am on Sunday. The closest stop to the event site is Foggy Bottom/GWU on the Orange and Blue lines. The stop is located at 23rd & H Streets NW.
