Brief Description

This is the only event of its kind on the Navajo Nation. 2010 is the 27th Anniversary of the Shiprock Marathon & Relays, on Saturday May 1st. Events include a USATF certified Marathon, Marathon Relay, Half-Marathon and 10K Trail Walk. Runners from all 50 states and from around the world have participated in this soul-stirring high desert classic which passes by the amazing 40 million year old 1800’ cinder cone of Shiprock visible during most of the Marathon.

REGISTRATION FOR ALL EVENTS IS AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY.

Marathon - $55 through April 2nd then $60
Marathon Relay - $150/team through April 2nd then $175
Half Marathon - $40 through April 2nd then $45
10K Trail Walk - $20 through April 2nd then $25

Bib/Chip Mailed Option

Option to mail Bib# and Timing Chip available only during early registration. Recommend this option to those participants unable to pick up race packets the day before events, in Shiprock and Farmington, NM. Those who choose this option will receive their Bib# and Timing Chip by certified mail two weeks before events take place, and will pickup the remainder their of race packets after running/walking in their event.

Shiprock, NM

Shiprock, New Mexico is the largest community on the 25,000 square mile Navajo Nation. It is located in the Four Corners region of the United States (four state borders intersect at a single point, UT, CO, NM and AZ). The city of Shiprock is at the intersection of US Hwy 491 and US Hwy 64, next to the scenic San Juan River. Shiprock is 25 miles west of Farmington, NM, 30 miles south of Cortez, CO.

Please Note

Must be at least 12 years old to participate in competitive events.
The 10K Trail Walk is non-competitive.
20 miles of Route 13 will be closed (except for Event Support Vehicles) One lane of Hwy 491 will be closed for the final 6 miles of events.
Bus Transportation MUST be taken to starting lines for all competitive events.

Additional Information

The Course:

The Shiprock Marathon course is certified by USA Track and Field (NM04003DS). The Marathon and 5-person Coed Marathon Relays begin near Red Valley, less than a mile from the border with Arizona on Route 13. The Colorado high desert plateau scenery is breathtaking. The point-to-point road course finishes in the city of Shiprock. There are some hills along the way, mostly gradual inclines. A course map and a detailed altitude graph are available on the website: http://www.shiprockmarathon.com/ The Marathon begins at an elevation of almost 6000’, peaks at 6070’ a couple of miles into the course, and finishes at an altitude of 4800’. The final six miles of the course are on a gentle downhill or level grade.

Half-Marathon:

The Half-Marathon takes place on the second half of the Marathon course, beginning nearby the Shiprock.

Bus Transportation MUST be taken to starting lines for all competitive events.

Relay Team Rules:

  • Relay teams must have 5 runners and be coed to be eligible for awards
  • Must be at least 12 years old to participate in this event
  • Participants MUST use bus transportation to relay starting points
    No one will be allowed to drive their own vehicles to starting points
  • Each team will be issued a race number and relay exchange ankle band with chip for timing – (it must be worn on ankle for timing purposes)
  • The first four relay legs are 5 miles each, the final leg is 6.2 miles
  • Relay Team Captain MUST be one of the runners
  • Each runner can run on only one team and for one leg of the relay event
  • Each team member must read the Mandatory Release Form and provide their signature below – if under 18 years old, parent/guardian must also sign
  • Relay teams will compete in four age categories based upon the total age of the team on race day – 125 & Below; 126-175; 176-225; 226 & Above
  • Awards will be given to the first 3 teams in each age category

    TEAM MEMBER CHANGES can only be made through an Addendum Relay Team Registration via Active.com
    New team member must complete Relay Team Addendum Registration online and pay additional fee of $35 (early registration deadline); $40 (late registration)
    Addendum registration must clearly indicate who is being replaced and the name of the Relay Team affected
    NO CHANGES will be accepted after April 23rd (One week before events)

    The 10K Trail Walk

    The non-competitive 10K Trail Walk will start and end at the Marathon finish line area in Shiprock. The easy and scenic trail follows a path up and around what is known as “Blueberry Hill” to local residents.
