RULES & REGULATIONS
1. One bike per team (mountain bike preferred, the course will be a mix of off-road, grass, trails and pavement depending on the market). Participants are responsible for bringing their own bike.
2. Both participants will start the race together. All bikers will be lined up at the front of the start line, with all runners behind the bikers.
3. While on the course, runners stay to the right side of the trail and bikes pass on the left. Be courteous to those racers around you. Some paths may narrow, so be sure and call out if you are passing by.
4. Each team is required to switch skills after each obstacle. You may only switch skills at the obstacle/transition areas. There are 5 obstacles/transition areas on each course with the mud pit several hundred yards from the finish. (Depending on the city).
5. The biker will drop the bike in the transition area at each obstacle. The runner will complete the obstacle and then find the bike in the transition area.
6. Do not wait for partner after each obstacle.
7. Both participants MUST wear a bike helmet at all times with the chinstrap buckled. Participants are responsible for bringing their own bike helmets to the race.
8. Bike number plates will be provided, but we also suggest getting creative with marking your bike so that it is easily identifiable.
9. All racers must have a water bottle on the bike or a hydration system.
10. There is no running, jumping or diving into the mud pit. Participants will need to crawl through this obstacle in order to complete the race.
11. Team must finish the race together!
You can wait for your partner in the holding area adjacent to the final bike drop or the holding area BEFORE the mud pit.
12. There will be an area to rinse off after the race - so you may want to bring a towel, and extra clothes to change into - you won't want to miss the post race party and the awards ceremony.
13. Sunscreen is recommended.
14. Must be 14 years old to participate.
15. Everyone will need to sign another waiver on-site or at packet pickup. Each team member must sign (you can't sign for your partner) so be sure and get to the event early to avoid long lines at the waiver sign-in area.
16. Have Fun!!
Natural Disaster Policies
We experienced our first ever Natural Disaster in October of 2004 when we experienced the worst rainfall in the past 100 years in San Jose. The 9:30 pm the night before the race, the park rangers called to tell us that we could not do the event the next morning because the trails were too muddy and they felt runners and mountain bikes would cause permanent damage to the trails. We were left with no option. The next morning we had to tell 1,800 unhappy Muddy Buddy hopefuls that there would be no Muddy Buddy. It was difficult on everyone. Athletes enter a Muddy Buddy to have fun with their friends and family. The course was already set up and all the costs to put on the event, which are substantial, had already been spent.
If an Act of God/terrorism/Community Disaster occurs, what actions are taken?
1. We will make decisions based on safety first
2. Races will be altered as seen fit
3. Athletes in that race will have first right to sign up for that event the next year
4. Financial: The Muddy Buddy Ride and Run Series cannot accept the risk of a disaster for everyone. Each athlete needs to accept the risk of his or her entry fee. There will be NO REFUNDS or free entries to other future races. The money you paid is spent developing that race.
The Muddy Buddy Ride and Run Series does not save any money if you do not ride and run the course. Muddy Buddy has ordered and paid for every supply and service needed for that race. Muddy Buddy needs to pay for all race supplies or services associated with that race, regardless of the outcome. These include paying for permits, rangers, our staff/offices/warehouse/administration costs all year.
