The flagship program of the Salem Multicultural Institute (SMI) is the World Beat Festival, held each June at Riverfront Park. But year-round, SMI volunteers have long provided cultural assistance and referral services to local community organizations, state agencies, and individual schools. In 2006, SMI opened the World Beat Gallery in the Reed Opera House, giving local ethnic communities the opportunity to showcase their cultures. The newest program, Fabric of Cultures, is a series of performances and special lectures that complement the exhibits, ranging from an evening of classical Chinese puppetry to an informal winter concert that included musicians from four communities.
