History

In 2011 a crowd of over 300 runners and walkers turned out for this event in downtown Raleigh. Srini Iyer (15:47) was the overall winner. Debra Warner ran 20:44 to win the women’s title. Course records are held by Abdul Alzindani (14:32) and Jemissa Hess (16:36). The race, which was held in April has been moved up a few weeks.

Starting Times

The afternoon begins with the start of the 5K at 2 pm followed by the mile at 3pm and the Kids’ 100-Yard Dash at 3:15.

Entry fees/T-shirt Sales

The entry fees are $20 for the 5K if received NLT March 4th, $25 from March 4th to March 24th, and $30 on race day. The entry fee includes a short-sleeved technical shirt guaranteed to all those whose entries are received NLT March 4th. For the 1-mile run, the entry fee is $10, and for the Kid’s Dash, the fee is $5. The latter two entry fees do not include a shirt, but a shirt can be ordered with those entries for an additional $10 if received NLT March 4th.

Competitive vs Recreational

Those entering the 5K have the option of registering as a competitive or recreational entrant. Competitive entrants are those who wish to receive an official finishing time, to be eligible awards, and/or get credit for participating in the Second Empire Spring Grand Prix. Recreational entrants are those who do not care about receiving an official time, being eligible for awards and/or receiving points in the Grand Prix.

Awards

In the 5K, awards will be presented to the top three males overall, to the top three females overall, to the top three master finishers of each sex, to the top three wheelchair finishers and to the top three finishers in each of the following age divisions: (both sexes) 12-under, 13-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, and 75-over.

Early Packet Pickups

Pre-registered entrants can their race packets and late entrants can register either on Friday, March 23 at CapitalRun/Walk in Cameron Village from 4-7 pm or on Saturday, March 24th, at the Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern from 2-4 pm. Pre-registered entrants can also pick up their race packets and late entrants can register on race day at the start/finish area beginning at 12 noon.

Benefitting Organization

Proceeds from the race will benefit the Trinity Academy in Raleigh.

Second Empire Grand Prix

The Second Empire 5K Classic is also the fifth event in the ten-race Second Empire Spring 2012 Grand Prix Series. Runners who participate in these races accumulate points and are awarded money and prizes at an awards banquet held at the Second Empire Restaurant at the conclusion of the Series.
