History

The 2012 version of the Run for the Oaks will be the 30th annual running of this event. Over 600 runners signed up for this race in 2011. Brett Howell won the race in 16:19. Sarah Lee won the women's title in 18:21. Mark Andrews (14:23) holds the course mark for the men. Tara Wojcieckowski (16:58) holds the women’s course mark.

Location

The 5K race starts and finish on Person Street next to Moore Square at the City Market. To find the location, go to www.mapquest.com and type in 224 East Martin Street, Raleigh, NC.

Starting Times

The 5K is the first race of the day starting at 8:30 a.m. The kid's run for children ages 10 or younger begins at 9:30 a.m.

Entry Fees

The entry fees are $18 for recreational entries and $23 for competitive entries. After March 2, the fees are $20 and $25, respectively. The entry fee includes a t-shirt. There is no pre-registration or fee for the Children’s Run. Kids can sign up race day.

Competitive vs Recreational

The competitive entry will be issued a chip, will receive an official time and be eligible for awards. The recreational entry will not receive an official time. However, there will be a digital clock at the finish line where runners can see their finishing times.

Awards

Awards will be presented to the first three males overall, to the first three females overall and to the top finishers in each of the following age groups (both sexes); 15-under, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, and 60-over.

Corporate Team Competition

Once again the Run for the Oaks is the first race in the Eastern Carolina Corporate Cup Road Race Series. Teams can consist of 3-5 members (all working for the same employer) with the first three finishers on each team comprising the team score. Awards will be presented to the top three male teams and to the top three female teams.

Late Registration/Packet Pickup

Late entrants can register and preregistered runners can pick up their packets on Thursday, March 8, at Capital RunWalk located at 430 Woodburn Road in Cameron Village between 5-7.. Also late entrants can register and preregistered runners can pick up their packets at the start/finish at Moore Square on race day beginning at 7 am.

Second Empire Grand Prix

The Run for the Oaks is also the fourth event in the ten-race Second Empire Spring 2012 Grand Prix Series. Runners who participate in these races accumulate points and are awarded money and prizes at an awards banquet held at the Second Empire Restaurant at the conclusion of the Series.
