History

The Run for the Roses, now in its 32nd year, is the area’s oldest continuous run road race. In 2011 over 550 runners and walkers registered for the event. Brett Howell led all finishers in the 5K with a 16:23 clocking. Catherine Seaton won the women’s competition in 18:40 and established a new course mark for the women. Derrin Pierret holds the men’s course mark of 16:12 set in 2010.

Course

The course will be the same as last year and the same as the one used for the Women’s Distance Festival starting and finishing at the Halifax Community Center located at 1015 Halifax Street in downtown Raleigh.

Individual vs Couples Competition

There are two categories of competition – individual or couples. When signing up, registrants must choose between competing as an individual competitor or as part of a male/female couple’s team.

Awards - Individual Competition

In the individual competition, awards will be presented to the first three males overall, to the first three females overall, to the first three masters of each sex overall, and to the top three finishers in each of the following age groups: (both sexes) 12-under, 13-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80-over.

Awards - Couples Competition

In the couples competition, awards will be given to the top three couples overall with the lowest combined times.

Pump 'n Run

Additionally, there will also be a Pump ‘n Run competition in which women will be required to bench press 50% of their weight and men will press 100% of their weight. For each press, 30 seconds will be subtracted from one’s 5K time. Awards will be presented to the three males and three females with the lowest net times. Entrants can enter this competition on race day by paying an additional $5 fee.

Children's Runs

The children’s runs will begin at 3 pm. There will be a 100-meter run for children 6 and under and a ¼ mile run for those ages 6-10. Medals will be given to all finishers in the children’s run.

Entry Fees/T-shirts

The entry fee is $25 for the 5K and no fee for the children’s runs. T-shirts will be given to all 5K runners registered by February 1. After that date, the 5K fee remains the same, but does not include a shirt. NCRC members receive a $3 discount.

Second Empire Grand Prix

The Run for the Roses is also the second event in the ten-race Second Empire Spring 2012 Grand Prix Series. Runners who participate in these races accumulate points and are awarded money and prizes at an awards banquet held at the Second Empire Restaurant at the conclusion of the Series. Pet Food Donations

On race day, the race will be collecting pet food donations for local shelter and rescue groups. In 2011 over 800 lbs was donated.

Benefitting Charity

A portion of the proceeds will be given to Carolina Canines for Service which trains service dogs for veterans with limited mobility. For more information on Carolina Canines, go to http://www.carolinacanines.org

Additional Information

Last year the 28th edition of this race attracted over 600 runners and walkers. Derek Fenton took top honors in the 5K in 16:16. Adiranne Soo won the women’s title in 18:56. The course will be the same as last year and the same as the one used for the Women’s Distance Festival starting and finishing at the Halifax Community Center located at 1015 Halifax Street in downtown Raleigh. There is a new twist to the race this year. When signing up, registrants must choose between competing as an individual competitor or as part of a male/female couple’s team. After registering as a co-ed, (each person will register as a co-ed) you will the sign up at registration on race day with your partner. This will allow you to change partners if for some reason someone is sick or can't make the race. We can also revert you back to an individual if necessary. In the individual competition, awards will be presented to the first three males overall, to the first three females overall, to the first three masters of each sex overall, to the first three grandmasters overall for each sex and to the top three finishers in each of the following age groups: (both sexes) 19-under, 20-254, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 79-over. Late entrants can register and pre-registered runners can pick up their packets at TrySports @ Crabtree Valley Mall on Saturday, February 11th from 2 pm - 6 pm.
