The Cause

The funds raised from the event will primarily go toward specific projects providing clean water for Ethiopians, as obtaining clean water is the biggest single challenge for most each day in rural Ethiopia. The statistics are truly astounding. Only one person in ten has access to clean water. 80% of all illness is due to dirty water. 250,000 children die each year from diarrhea. One Ethiopian child in ten dies before its fifth birthday with half of those dying from diarrhea.

More Staggering Statistics Supporting the Cause

3.7 billion work hours are lost every year due to long-distance water gathering. On average, women and children walk 4 miles and carry 40 pounds of water to their families daily. 50% of Ethiopians are living with water bourne diseases.

The Charity

Proceeds from this year’s run/walk event will benefit “A Glimmer of Hope Foundation” based in Austin, Texas which focuses on projects in Ethiopia. Because this foundation pays all of its operating expenses through an endowment, it is able to offer a unique opportunity to its gracious donors who help some of the poorest people in the world, one that sees every dollar donated get to where it is needed.

How is this fundraiser unique?

The impact of your participation is immense. Your contribution will change the lives for those halfway across the world. The race organizer has the goal to show the results from the funds raised to all participants and volunteers. See 1st video update from Strides For Africa 2010 at http://vimeo.com/22134438

Note from the Race Organizer

Upon travelling to Ethiopia in July 2009 to bring my adopted son home, one image of a young Ethiopian boy who was filling up a 5-gallon water jug for his family has stuck with me. The water the young boy was collecting was very dirty water from a road pothole. Inspired by that image, Strides for Africa 2010 raised over $4,500 to fully fund a water well in Robit, Ethiopia. This event helps to continue that effort and hopefully spark similar efforts across Africa in future years.

Obey race officials; yield to ALL emergency vehicles. All strollers/wagons for kids are recommended in the walk only. If you would like to run with a jogging stroller, please be respectful of other runners and start in the back. No bicycles, roller blades, or pets.
