Additional Information
In 1992, Friends of the Chicago River hosted 25 volunteers for “Chicago River Rescue Day.” Twenty years, 43,000 volunteers and nearly 500 tons of trash later, Friends is excited to celebrate its 20th anniversary of Chicago River Day with Chicago River Day 20/20. Friends of the Chicago River was founded in 1979 to improve and protect the Chicago River. Today, the organization has more than 2,000 members and 4,000 volunteers and online advocates that support its work for a Chicago River that is both ecologically healthy and a catalyst for community revitalization. A portion of the proceeds from your tour registration will go towards programs such as helping to get school children on a voyage of discovery through a field trip to the river, buying tools for volunteer restoration days along the river’s edge, and much more. You can also take advantage of a one-time pass, good for the 2012 season to Friends’ must-see McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum once it opens for the season on May 11. Chicago River Day festivities begin April 23 with 20 days of river-related events throughout the watershed and culminate on May 12 with the 20th annual Chicago River Day. Checkout Friends’ calendar to see what else you can do.
