Additional Information
For the last 17 years, the ABC 7 Jim Gibbons 5K has proven itself as a landmark event in the Chicagoland area and is a major fundraiser for the Leukemia Research Foundation. Each year on the third Thursday in June, more than 2,500 people gather along Chicago’s lakefront to run, walk and raise funds in search of a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and MDS in memory of Jim Gibbons. Jim was a highly-respected 25-year veteran investigative reporter at ABC 7 when he succumbed to Leukemia in 1994.
The actual event consists of the 5K Run, a non-competitive 3K Walk and Survivors’ Strut and a festival type atmosphere. Participants enjoy food from Chicago restaurants, complimentary refreshments, live music from one of Chicago’s well known bands, and the opportunity to visit the many partner tents on-site. This creates a great atmosphere for the participants to interact. With all this event has to offer, it becomes much more than just a race!
