The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K has always been a world-class race, ranking high on runners' calendars consistently over many years. At the same time, the event brings together recreational runners, walkers and families from southern New England.
The organization is superb, beginning with Race Director Charlie Breagy and right on down through an expert and experienced organization and great volunteers. Year after year the excitement builds as elite athletes from across the US and around the world gather in Providence to compete for fast times, big prizes and bragging rights. This is a unique opportunity for New Englanders to race with and rub elbows with some of the best runners in the world. Make no mistake, this is a world-class event.
World-class family event too
With 21 different youth races, the Tufts Health Care High School 3K and the CVS Caremark "All Kids Can" race event, there is something for everyone in the family—for every age, and for every pace. There's no excuse to not bring the whole family to this one-of-a-kind weekend for runners, families and running families. This is something you and your family are not going to want to miss. How many times do average runners get to participate in a true National Championship? And there will be live music to keep things rocking and rolling.
The organizers do a great job of making the Youth Races more than just another 'fun run'. It has the look and feel of a class running event, and the participants appreciate that. The kids really get into it, and you might be surprised at how competitive they can become. It is a taste of the healthy, active lifestyle and has a huge impact on each child. This is a great way to give something back to the local schools and it gives the kids true self esteem and pride in their accomplishments—and instills a love of running.
There will be great collectible technical shirts and popular CVS Caremark goodie-bags for the first 5,000 registrants. Time is running out to get yours!
Everybody gets a shirt at this race, but the first 5,000 to register get a super-collectible, two-tone tech T-shirt, as well as the famous CVS Caremark goodie-bag. This shirt is a good looking reward that you can train and race in or just wear with pride. The goodie-bag is produced by the sponsors, of course, and is chock-full of useable toiletries and gifts that everyone clamors for.
Both of these items are crowd pleasers, but you need to register soon. The goal for attendance is to exceed last year's total of 6,500, but space is limited. At this writing the numbers are already approaching 3,500, and marketing for the race kicks into high gear in August; so if you want to get these cool gifts you need to act soon and register for the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K to ensure you get yours.
If you're from the Boston area this race is for you. It's convenient and well organized. You can hop on the train in Boston and pop out right at the start and finish line in Providence. Or you can make a weekend of it by taking advantage of the Marriott Providence host hotel, where the elites will be staying, a five minute walk away. It's so convenient for Boston area runners that there just is no excuse not to come to Providence with your family or friends, hang out and run the race.
Boston area runners can take the train from North Station or South Station and roll into Providence for the race easy as pie.
Numbers don't lie
There are 2,000 kids running one of 21 age-appropriate youth races. There are another 2,000 set to run the Tufts Health Care High School 3K. The "All Kids Can" 200-Meter Run/Walk, an inspiration run for physically and/or intellectually challenged kids, rounds out the weekend of racing. There is no other set of races in the New England area that are so inclusive. There is truly something for everyone at the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K and related events.
