In 2009, more than 17,000 women participated in 10 Aflac Iron Girl events nationwide—covering over 150 miles of swimming, biking and running. And that's just the beginning. There is strength in numbers and the series is hitting numbers that can't be ignored. It began in 2004 with just two races, and since then Iron Girl has allowed thousands of women to continue on their journey to a healthy lifestyle. As the series continues to grow each year, participants can up the ante on their own fitness levels, setting their sights on longer distance races or broadening their horizons to compete in a multisport event in the months ahead. And many plan to travel to new and exciting destinations to participate in as many events as possible; 2010 races range in distances from 5K to 15K road races, and duathlons and triathlons add variation.
"It's an experience that lives beyond the finish line," said Judy Molnar, vice president of Iron Girl. "It's not over once you finish one race; it's about continuing this fitness lifestyle forever and setting new goals." The series is structured with new athletes in mind, giving them the opportunity to grow in their own fitness. These beliefs are also beautifully symbolized in the Iron Girl "Grace" emblem, which represents each woman's ability to power through challenges and overcome obstacles—all while maintaining a positive sense of self.
