How to Find Time and Money to Train for a Long-Distance Race

Sports Drinks

Sports drinks are one of the easiest ways to save money. Rather than buying brand name drinks, use Kool-Aid. Just cut the amount of sugar in half and add a ? teaspoon of salt. It will get you through your long runs just as well. For recovery, drink a glass of low-fat, chocolate milk and, of course, water. Works like a charm!

Energy Food

As you increase your distances you will need to ingest easily digestible calories during your runs. You can look into options like GU Energy Gels or Clif ShotBloks. These options aren't too expensive, but if you're looking for the bottom basement solution try jellybeans or gummy bears. The sugar in these sweet treats can get the job done too.

Running Belts

Running belts are a thin belt that you wear around your waist while out on the road. They can have a pocket for small items like a phone or keys. Some also have straps to hold water bottles or energy gels. One of my favorite running belt brands is SPIBelt. Their belts cost from $15 to about $30, depending on what you need. An SPIBelt will last for years. You can also go to running expos to check out different brands. Some brands will give you a free belt if you purchase something else from them.

Water Bottles

You will need to carry water or sports drinks with you as you increase your mileage. For that, you need a water bottle. If your running belt comes with a water bottle you can use that. If not, there are many inexpensive water bottles available. Look at your local discount stores or pick one up as a freebie at a running expo. You can also re-use a plastic water bottle.
