About BATS Improv
Since 1986, BATS Improv has dedicated itself to the performance, study, development, and promotion of improvisational theatre. Our key programs are:
Affordably priced improv performances 50 weekends per year-BATS Main Stage Company has been entertaining Bay Area audiences since 1986. Our unique style of storytelling-based improvisational theatre has made us Northern California’s largest improv theatre center and is a benchmark for improv all over the world. We perform short sketches as well as feature-length Shakespeare, murder mystery, science fiction, and Broadway-style musicals, among other formats. The SF Chronicle calls us “bounce-in-your-seat funny,” and SF Weekly says, “Chicago has Second City. San Francisco has BATS.” All together, BATS has garnered 15 “Best of…” awards from the media, including best theatre, comedy, and improv group.
Workshops for actors and non-actors-Certified coaches and actors immerse some 2,000 students per year in games and exercises that teach such skills as active listening, making one’s partner look good, failing good-naturedly, and taking risks. Students can pursue either a performance or “off-stage life skills” track. Applied specialty classes include Improv for Business People, Shy People, Singles, Educators, and Seniors. Without exception, students tell us that taking part in an improv class makes a positive impact on their personal and professional lives.
BATS Improv On-The-Go training and entertainment—BATS brings events to for-profit and non-profit workplaces—or coworkers to our theater—to engage them in fun activities that contribute to better collaboration and communication. Companies served include Google, Genentech, Yelp, Oracle, Barclays Global Investors, UC Berkeley, and countless other institutions throughout California. Our coaches also teach improvisation at diverse regional arts organizations, including the American Conservatory Theatre, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and college theatre arts programs.
Youth Performance Series-BATS provides a positive introduction to the performing arts and teaches applicable life skills to nearly 1,000 middle-school students from underserved socio-economic communities. BATS emphasizes productive collaboration, clear communication, creative expression, critical thinking, and, storytelling. This training enhances students’ verbal expression, listening skills, body awareness, interpersonal intelligence, and self-confidence. Though our overall audiences are largely Caucasian (77%), student-focused programs like YPS, summer kids and teen camps, and Young Audiences of the Bay Area team reach a higher proportion of African-American, Asian, and Latino teens. We have also worked with juvenile halls, schools for pregnant teens/teenage moms, and students with physical and cognitive disabilities.
Laughing Stock- In 1997, BATS created Laughing Stock, a program of free improvisation classes for people with HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis C, cancer, and other chronic, life-threatening illnesses. (Partners and caregivers are also welcome.) The classes focus on strengthening quality of life through humor, physical activity, group interaction, risk-taking, and imagination games—all in a safe, confidential environment. Today, BATS offers more than 50 free workshops each year with up to 12 students in each class.
Today’s medical advances are enabling patients to live longer, fuller lives after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Survival rates for cancer are up as is longevity of those with HIV and AIDS. We know the value of “humor therapy” that improv adds to individual health, quality of life, and community building. BATS’ established reputation and proven track record of successful Laughing Stock classes position us well to meet this great community need.
