“This is a once a year opportunity to help people out and have a blast doing it,” team founder Dj Wilson said.
Famous for riding the Rockford area on fur covered bicycle, Team Fur Bandit decided in 2006 to channel their popularity to help people.
Since 2014 the team has been collecting old and discarded bicycles, which they then fix up and make usable before donating them to the Rescue Mission. “A bike can be a real life saver for someone trying to get back up on their feet. If someone doesn’t have a car and is struggling to make ends meet, a bicycle might be the only affordable way to get to a job and maybe support a family. After we refurbish the bikes the Mission distributes them to folks who can use them,” said team member Tricia Wilson.
The Tour de Frost is a safe, fun, fully supported bike ride around Rockford. Cyclists go in a group in this no-drop ride, and are treated to stops along the way at Olympic Tavern and Rockford Bicycle Company. Growing every year, the last ride brought in cyclists from as far as Milwaukee and the Quad Cities to do the twenty mile loop, which ends with a pizza party at Oscar’s on State.
